This is for animals suitable for adoption. We use the Foster Program for animals that do not house well in a kennel or cage. Please remember that Foster’s must be able to be brought back to the Shelter when an adopter wants to see them. We will schedule that with you, so having an easy schedule does help.
When surrendering an animal you must do the following:
Please contact the Shelter to be put on our list 518-296-8390
You must reside in Schoharie County and have proof of residency.
You must have a valid photo ID.
Be prepared to spend at least 30 minutes at the Shelter when surrendering. We try to get as much info as possible about the animal so we can place them in the best home.
We are not an open enrollment Shelter. We are a no-kill Shelter that is why we have a waiting list.
Adoption hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 1 pm – 4:30 pm. Once we receive your application it usually takes around 2-3 days to process. We require a Vet reference, and 3 personal references. We will then set up a home visit. All adopters must be 18 or older and have a Valid ID. If you rent we must speak with your landlord and or see your lease stating that you can have a dog or cat. We do not operate on a first come first serve basis, we will choose the best home for our adoptable animals. We have the right to deny any application for false info and Vet concerns.
Our Low Cost Spay/ Neuter program is available for cats only. You must be a Schoharie County resident and meet income requirements. Please fill out the application and submit it. We will contact you and set up a time to go over the application. If you are approved, we will set up your cat’s alter at the Howes Cave Animal Hospital.
